Living in Coupeville offers all the benefits of small town charm with big city services. Coupeville is the gathering place for local residents and tourists alike as they experience festivals that take place year round. The common bond of pride in the ongoing preservation of Ebey Landing Historical Reserve is part of the heartbeat of this unique community.
The landscape of Ebey’s Landing National Historic Preserve is open to visitors and residents. This 25 square mile historical reserve encompasses a mixture of federal, state, county and private property, all managed in a way that preserves its historic essence. This means that changes in the cultural landscape will continue but in a way that respects the past. Historic farms are still being worked, forests are still harvested and century old buildings are now being used as homes or places of business. Two state parks and a light house are located with the Ebey, as well as the waterfront town of Coupeville, one of the oldest towns in Washington State.
Schools in the area are governed by the Coupeville School District, which offers a wide spectrum of educational opportunities from successful public schools to innovative private enterprises. A Gates Grant in 2002 allowed Coupeville High School to upgrade their technology and redesign the school to follow a learning community model. Students at the high school now have more involvement in school operations, and work closely in small groups with an advisor. The District also operates a highly respected after school tutoring program called Learning Partners, an enrichment program called After the Facts, and a special before school elementary reading program. Combined, these additional educational programs have helped raise graduation rates via improved test scores, and reading and math proficiency levels.
Langley also emulates the feel of a small town world located just minutes from the Mukilteo Ferry and the faced paced Seattle metropolis. Tucked into the town’s flower-filled countryside and its lush green courtyards are a variety of art galleries, antique stores, shops, restaurants, bakeries, coffee houses, and brew pubs. Walks along the main streets of this waterfront town are both relaxing and exciting as there is so much to do in such a small space. Langley offers spectacular views of Saratoga Passage, Camano Island, the Cascades, and of course, the Puget Sound. On most days, sightseers can sport great blue herons, sea lions, and an occasional gray whale. For those who enjoy the performing arts, Langley features a 246-seat theater supports a year round program of local and touring music, theater, and dance.
Freeland is considered by locals to be an “off-highway delight” with beautiful views of Holmes Harbor. Convenient to several Island attractions, Freeland offers a full range of services, restaurants, shopping and overnight comfort for its many visitors. Freeland Park has a sizeable boat launch and is a popular place to start one’s day Salmon fishing. The town also features many expansive parks and an 18-hole golf course that is suitable for all levels of play. Homes in Freeland are unique in structure and design and offer residents preferring more privacy the peace of mind they seek.
Clinton is the Island community nearest Seattle and is a popular bedroom community for the mainland metropolis. Access to Seattle is via the Mukilteo-Clinton Ferry. This small town features several fishing spots along Deer Lake and Possession Point County Park, which also serves as the area’s primary boat launch. Clinton is a very quiet and simple community with many fine homes located on secluded roads off the beaten path.
Together, the towns of Coupeville, Freeland, Langley and Clinton make for ideal places to live, work and play depending on one’s preference. For constant excitement and community spirit, no island community captivates the island spirit more than Coupeville. For those who enjoy fine dining and shopping, Freeland is the perfect ingredient for this recipe of life. Langley and Clinton offer more exclusivity and for those seeking to live in a peaceful setting with little distraction from outsiders, then any of the family-friendly neighborhoods in either of these communities will be perfect for you.
